Electronic Health Record 2.0: an important step towards digital healthcare

On 2 August 2023, the Electronic Health Record (FSE) 2.0 officially came into operation. This is an important step towards digitising Italian healthcare, in line with the guidelines of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

FSE 2.0 (Italy's Electronic Health Record) is a digital platform that collects and stores every citizen's health data, from birth to death. The data held in the FSE is accessible to all authorised healthcare professionals, allowing them to have a complete, up-to-date view of the patient's clinical history.

The data held in the FSE 2.0 (Italy's Electronic Health Record) includes:

  • identification and administrative data of the citizen
  • medical reports and accident and emergency records
  • discharge letters
  • patient summary
  • specialist and pharmaceutical prescriptions
  • other documents such as clinical records, vaccinations and card data for implant carriers

FSE 2.0, Italy's Electronic Health Record, offers a range of benefits to both citizens and healthcare professionals:

  • For citizens, the FSE 2.0 (Italy's Electronic Health Record) gives access to their own health data at any time and in any place, and lets them share it with their healthcare professionals. This can make communication between healthcare professionals easier and improve the quality of care.
  • For healthcare professionals, the FSE 2.0 (Italy's Electronic Health Record) gives a complete, up-to-date view of the patient's clinical history, improving diagnosis and care.

In addition, FSE 2.0 is interoperable, meaning the data can be shared between the different Italian regions. This can make it easier for patients to move around and ensure access to care even for those who travel to a region other than the one where they live. It is also an important tool for improving the quality of care and making the Italian health system more efficient. Its widespread rollout across the whole country will be essential to guarantee all citizens complete, up-to-date access to health information.

The Electronic Health Record 2.0 is a valuable resource for Italian healthcare. Its introduction is an important step towards digitising the health system and promoting the health of citizens.
